Quality and Patient Care

The Quality of Practice Domain supports endeavors that focus on enhancing patient outcomes and safety in the nuclear medicine and molecular imaging field. With in-depth knowledge and expertise in cutting-edge technology, literature, and evidence-based data, the committees and task forces under the Quality of Practice Domain have developed comprehensive and practical resources to support providers in nuclear medicine practice and their patients.

What We Are Doing

To ensure we remain at the forefront of science, the Society of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) actively seeks opportunities for improvement and revisits the goals and priorities set forth in its strategic plan. SNMMI believes it is important to keep pace with the rapid expansion and availability of radiopharmaceuticals and imaging technology.

The Quality, Evidence, and Patient Safety Committee takes a lead role in identifying and developing resources for high-quality practice of nuclear medicine for the community. SNMMI has developed evidence-based guidance documents such as Procedure Standards and Appropriate Use Criteria. In 2022, SNMMI began the pilot phase of the radiopharmaceutical therapy registry (RaPTR), which will serve as a data collection and quality improvement tool. The Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Center of Excellence (RPTCOE) program highlights centers that have affirmed they have the trained personnel, equipment, and experience needed to manage patients receiving radiopharmaceutical therapy. In addition, SNMMI is committed to ensuring providers in the nuclear medicine community deliver the best patient care by establishing benchmarks and quality measures. SNMMI engages in stakeholder collaboration to ensure best practices are applied across all areas of nuclear medicine, molecular imaging, and radiopharmaceutical therapy. We collaborate with many organizations such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Nuclear Medicine Regulatory Commission, and other medical specialty societies.
